CHRISTINE TRAINOR and GERALD BEAULIEU BIOGRAPHIES
Christine Trainor is a printmaker, painter, papermaker and book artist. She is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (BFA) as well as the Ontario College of Art and Design University (AOCA).
As the owner of HazelTree Press & Paper, a private press and handmade paper mill, Trainor's art practice has evolved to encompass intaglio, lithography, letterpress, papermaking, bookbinding, and painting.
At OCAD, Trainor studied hand lithography, intaglio, serigraphy, relief and letterpress printing, in addition to painting, drawing, anatomy and photography. She then completed a BFA at NSCAD before returning to OCAD to complete a fifth year studio level specialization in book arts. With the publication of her first limited edition private press book, The Sacred Beetle and Others, she launched HazelTree Press in 1994.
Trainor studied bookbinding for several years through the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. She completed the full range of fine binding courses with Don Taylor and Betsy Palmer-Eldridge in addition to studying book and paper restoration and conservation. Through CBBAG, Trainor also travelled to B.C. to study letterpress printing with Barbarian Press.
HazelTree Press quickly evolved into HazelTree Press & Paper as Trainor set up a production handmade paper mill. Working with a colleague, she moved the mill into a shared space with a trades bindery, where she honed her skills developing projects with other printers, designers, bookbinders. A unique range of fine handmade papers began to take shape.
In 1998 Trainor moved HazelTree Press & Paper to Prince Edward Island, where she continues to live and work, producing an ever widening range of beautiful handmade papers.
As a painter and printmaker, Trainor is known for her richly coloured landscapes and fluid brushwork. Using landscape and materials as metaphor for human history and experience, she explores the light and atmosphere intrinsic to coastal regions Trainor's work has been exhibited in over 60 solo and group shows. Her work can be found in hundreds of private and public collections and has been the subject of several documentary films. She has completed several public commissions and been the recipient of numerous awards.
HazelTree Press & Paper has been exhibiting at book arts fairs, as well as wholesale and retail craft shows, for over 20 years.
Gerald Beaulieu originally comes from Welland, Ontario. He studied art at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, graduating in 1987. In 1988 he moved to Prince Edward Island where he now works and lives. He is primarily a sculptor and installation artist. He has been awarded seven Canada Council for the Arts awards and nine Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts awards and a number of national awards for his work. He has had over 70 solo and group exhibitions across Canada the U.S. and Europe. His work is in numerous public collections including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. His permanent and temporary works have been installed in a number of cities in Canada. He recently completed a significant public commission for the city of Fredericton, installed this spring.
He lives and works with Christine Trainor, learning and perfecting the craft of hand paper making, while trapped in a dark damp subterranean locale. He has recently incorporated handmade paper into his sculptural practice as well as producing traditional paper products.
As a volunteer arts advocate He has served on the boards of many local and national arts organizations. In these roles he has negotiated voluntary tariffs and collective agreements, presented at numerous conferences, nominated Governor General award winners and successfully defended artists rights in the Supreme Court of Canada.
